Guns are a serious responsibility. All gun owners have to ensure that their firearms are stored safely and securely in order to prevent accidents or unauthorized access. It is also essential to teach children about guns—teaching them the importance of respecting firearms and understanding how they work, as well as stressing that they should never touch a gun without adult supervision.

When storing your firearm, it’s essential to take all the necessary steps to ensure it is safe and secure from being accessed by unauthorized individuals. It is recommended that weapons be stored in a gun safe or lockbox which is specifically designed for that purpose. The box should be securely locked with a key or combination code known only to the firearm’s owner.

It should also be placed in an area with restricted access, such as a locked closet or basement storage area, away from children and other potential unsupervised users. Additionally, people should store ammunition separately from the gun and securely lock it away.

Be sure to record all combination numbers or access codes used on locks and keep them in a safe space, like a fireproof safe, so they are not available if the key is lost or stolen. Finally, before locking up your firearm and stowing it away, always double-check that it is completely unloaded with no ammunition left inside the chamber.

Remembering that gun safety goes beyond just physical storage is also essential. As a gun owner, you should also be familiar with laws and regulations regarding gun ownership in your area and proper firearm handling, maintenance, and training.

This is needed to avoid accidental discharge, misuse, and theft of your gun. The sobering death statistics from accidental shootings make it clear that safe gun storage and responsible practices should be a top priority. Accepting mere statistics as consolation can be difficult for families grieving a loved one lost to an accidental shooting. But such data provide essential perspectives on how many lives are tragically taken by gun violence in this country and should not go unnoticed.

Across the United States, millions of American children live in households containing at least one unlocked and unloaded firearm, creating a potential disaster if not handled safely by locking and storing them properly. In 2020, a grim reality emerged—during the Covid-19 pandemic, 3,906 more people died from firearms, and 9,278 were injured due to gunfire compared to 2019. Even worse? 70% of accidental shootings by minors happened inside their own home.

Gun fatalities are often the result of playing around, unsafely believing a gun is unloaded or hunting activities. According to one study, 28.3% of unintentional deaths by firearm were caused by individuals irresponsibly handling guns at any age; 17.2% when someone assumed incorrectly that a weapon was not loaded; and 13.8% while participating in field sports such as hunting trips going wrong.

Sadly, in the year 2022 alone, around 210 children (ages 0-17) were fatally shot, and a further 519 were injured in gun-related accidents. Those under the age of 25 are especially vulnerable to these occurrences due to impulsive behavior, an inclination for risk-taking, and curiosity about firearms often associated with adolescence.

Don’t take any chances; ensure that you are taking the necessary precautions to protect yourself, your family, and those around you when handling firearms. Being diligent with safety is always better than being sorry in hindsight.

Despite taking every precaution, there may be times when your firearm or someone else’s could fall into the wrong hands. Unfortunately, once that happens, you will have no control over what takes place and, therefore, cannot turn off access to the gun.

The thought of someone accessing a firearm without permission is terrifying, and learning how to respond in any such situation is essential.
